Tips For Taking Your Pup Out On The Town

Tips For Taking Your Pup Out On The Town

A well socialized dog is a happy dog! Taking your dog out and about, either to dog-friendly restaurants or other public places can be the best of times or the worst of times though, depending upon your dog’s level of training and etiquette. If you long to take your fur baby wherever you go, here are some tips for successful outings.

Basic Training and Etiquette 101

Training your dog the basics is not only kind, it’s necessary these days. Since well-trained dogs are a delight to be around, they end up spending more time with their loved ones, and what dog doesn’t want more time with you? According to the ASPCA, your dog needs to respond to a minimum of four basic commands: “sit, stay, heel, leave it, and come.”

  • The first rule of etiquette is for you to remember that not everyone loves dogs. Some may have allergies and some may be afraid of them. Whatever their reason, we need to be sensitive this.
  • Never let your dog approach a stranger without asking their permission.
  • If your dog starts barking uncontrollably, it’s time to go home.
  • When eating out, don’t allow your dog to beg at the table or from other guests.
  • As Mr. Manners, an etiquette and lifestyle expert, says: “Owners must be attentive to how their pets behave at all times.” This also means reading their body language as in knowing the signs for when they need a bio break or when they’re stressed out.
  • No matter how well-behaved your dog is, always keep him leashed while in public (unless you’re in a dog park where they can run free range).
  • As stated by the Animal Humane Society, “If your dog does something to upset someone (jumping up, barking, etc.), apologize to them and take measures to prevent the situation from reoccurring.

Must-Haves for Every Time You Venture From Home:

Just as you need certain essentials for your dog inside your house, there are essentials for when you leave your house as well:

  • Collar or harness (with current I.D. tag, of course)
  • Leash
  • Poop bags

Dog-Friendly Cafes

  • Prior to arriving, feed your dog and then get him tuckered out by taking him for a nice long walk!
  • When entering an outdoor cafe or restaurant, or any public place, scope out your surroundings. Are there any potential dangers such as an aggressive looking dog? Decide the best place for you to sit. You know your dog best. If you think it would be too much for him to sit next to the table of sizzling steak eaters, see if you can sit away from them. Also plan on an exit strategy just in case you need to get out of there quickly.
  • While walking in, maintain control at all times. Do not allow your dog to sniff other tables or walk up to them.
  • Set up your furbaby’s domain. Bring a pad or his favorite blanket to lie on, perhaps under your table (as long as you’re confident no one will accidentally kick him!).
  • Come prepared with treats and a durable chew toy (one that doesn’t squeak!). What works really well is bringing one of those rubber toys you can stuff with your dog’s food and then freeze. This gives your dog a project to work on and keeps him occupied. Of course, you could always order something special for him too! (You’ll want to make sure you have your portable water bowl with you.)

It’s really up to you to help your dog make good choices. By following these tips, your faithful friend is bound to enjoy himself, and you will have done everything you can to ensure peaceful encounters with all the two- and four-legged creatures you come across. Your work will be more than worth it. Happy travels and bone appetit!
