The Poop on Poo

My company, Got Poo…?, offers safe and convenient pet waste removal for residential and commercial properties. After years of scooping, I’ve realized that there is a lot to be learned from looking at the quality and quantity of pet poop. All foods are not equal!

Poop from dogs that are eating good quality kibble – high in protein and low in fillers – is mall, moist, compact and mild in odor. If your dog’s food ingredients contain high quantities of indigestible fillers – grain by-products, fibers, additives, binders, carbohydrates, coloring, fats, preservatives, and flavoring – your dog’s food will go in one end and straight out the other, producing stinky, large, voluminous poop. In other words: garbage in, garbage out!

How do you evaluate the quality of kibble? Read the label! Don’t fall for marketing gimmicks, like images of gourmet meals of wholesome cuts of meat and vegetables. This is rarely the case. The first 10 ingredients will give you a good indication of how good the food is. Ingredients are listed by weight with the heaviest first.

The first ingredient should be a named protein source such as lamb, turkey, elk, salmon, or beef. Ideally, three or four of the first six ingredients should be good meat products. Look for a range between 18% and 30% protein on the guaranteed analysis on the label. Your vet can tell you if certain health conditions require more or less protein. Stay away from pet food that contain chicken and meat by-products as these frequently include waste parts as well as rejected meats.

The pet food should contain whole grains that have their nutrients and fiber intact. Avoid foods with corn, wheat, or soy as first ingredients, and grain by-products such as white flour and brewer’s rice have lost most of their nutrition during processing. The food may contain the specified amount of protein but it is unavailable to the dog. Quality foods enable your dog to assimilate maximum nutrition from less food.

High quality food uses vegetable oils rather than highly processed animal fats. Dogs need good fats for energy and for the absorption of fat soluble vitamins like A, D, and E.

With better eating habits and a little exercise, your newly trim K9 will not only feel better but will have small and better quality poops to be scooped up by our Got Poo…? crew.
